Living your best life and feeling like the greatest, grandest version of yourself has EVERYTHING to do with how you start your day!
When you start your morning with intention & purpose, you can move through your entire day fully in your power with the ability to take on all that your day brings.
How do you create a morning routine that supports your greatest, grandest self?
I don’t know about you, but most people tend to start their day being jolted awake by an alarm clock. They rise from their beds, groggy and half asleep (and often grumpy). Get dressed. And without much thought, they dive into their day haphazardly. Sound familiar?
There is an EASIER way… And it starts BEFORE you even get out of bed!
Here are the five elements of a powerful & meaningful morning routine:
1) SET YOUR INTENTION FOR THE DAY… BEFORE YOU GET OUT OF BED!
Once we get up and out of bed, we head for the coffee or get into the shower for a quick boost, and then we jump straight into our busy day. STOP!
Before we’re off, we have some really important things to do… And the first, is setting our intention for how we want to move through the day.
When we first wake, our brain is in a plastic (pliable) state. This is the perfect time give your brain direction for the day.
Visualize yourself going through your day the way you want to – totally in your power, staying calm, relaxed, and focused on what you need to accomplish.
For example, if you know there’s a difficult task at hand or big conversation happening during your day, visualize yourself going through that task and connect to how you want to feel while taking those things on.
You give your brain direction:
“This is lying ahead of me, and this is how I want to go through it.”
2) STRETCH & GROUND
The second element to starting your perfect morning is getting your body moving immediately after waking -AND- taking time to root into your power.
Now, I’m not saying to jump out of bed and right into a cardio exercise, but a stiff morning body does need a good stretch to awaken & a moment of grounding to get centered.
It’s easy! Simply…
Stretch out your legs,
wiggle your toes,
lift your arms out wide,
and breathe deeply.
Tip: When you’re ready to get out of bed, roll to one side, push yourself up so you’re back is straight and then get up. It’s about how you get out of bed!
With your feet on the ground, take a moment to ground yourself. (Skipping this step can cause overwhelm and that feeling like we’re stuck in our heads all day.) Spend a few seconds standing with your bare feet on the floor, imagining that you’re just like a tree.
You’re sending your roots deep, deep down into the earth, until you can imagine you’re hitting the core of the earth. Here, take a few deep breaths and anchor yourself. Tap into that core power.
This is a great time to practice gratitude. What happens when we’re grateful? We get more things to be grateful for!
“Thank you for all the blessings I have in my life.”
3) SAY NO TO SCREENS!
Gift yourself the time and space to ease out of your productive morning routine, and into the day, happy and without distraction.
For the first 15 minutes of the day, at least, keep the world from hijacking your attention span. You are in control!

4) SIT IN SILENCE
Most people skip this step because they think it’s unimportant. But just taking that time, whether for a few minutes or a half-hour, to give yourself space to connect, ground and visualize is a key component to having a great day.
“Prayer is when you talk to God; meditation is when you listen to God.”
Silence doesn’t have to mean staring at a wall for 15 minutes with your hands planted firmly on your kneecaps – If you can find a quiet activity that involves just you and your intentions, then you’ve already won.
Here are some ways to incorporate silence into your morning:
- Take a walk all alone, and listen to the world waking up around you.
- Do some sort of exercise, and really focus on your body and your breath in the process.
- Sip some hot lemon water while quietly contemplating the day.
Whatever allows you to connect, listen, and feel grateful, is worth throwing into the morning mix.
5) KICK START YOUR HEALTH & BOOST YOUR METABOLISM
Next up are some elements that have really made an impact in my life. The first; oil pulling.
This is the process of swishing with oil to pull out toxins and heavy metals in the mouth. After all night of our body detoxing, our mouths are full of toxins that are just waiting to be pulled out!
Here’s how oil pulling works:
- Before you eat or drink anything, put 1-2 tablespoons of oil (I like to use coconut oil) in your mouth.
- Swish the oil around in your mouth, working your way up to 20 minutes total.
- After you’re finished, spit the oil out (you’ll notice it’s gotten very watery) & brush your teeth.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to sit idle for 20 whole minutes. No way! While I have the oil in my mouth, I’m getting breakfast ready, making my daughter’s lunch and getting lots done during that time.
You’ll be surprised at how much you can get done without talking! 😉
Finally, I finish off my morning – after intention setting, stretching & grounding, sitting in silence and oil pulling (all while avoiding screens & technology!) – with a cup of hot lemon water.
Even for all you coffee drinkers out there, I really recommend having a cup of hot lemon water before your cup of coffee. It awakens your digestive tact and gets your metabolism going. Great for detoxing!
